Sturgeon Moon + Lammas
August 5 to August 6
August’s lunar gathering honors the full Sturgeon Moon. It doubles as OSS celebration of Lammas, the first harvest festival.
At the Sturgeon moon, we are kicking off our “WTF?” educational series on diverse pagan paths. If you’ve ever come across an unknown magical or religious tradition, and asked yourself “WTF is that?,” well, this is the series for you! Each guest tradition will include a workshop and an opportunity to experience a ritual in that tradition’s style.
This month, we are featuring two distinct traditions: AfroCuban Traditions and Heathenism.
Potluck starts at 6, with ritual following at about 8pm. Come early to settle in, help prepare, or volunteer on the land.
Donations are optional, but suggested for lunar gatherings. We depend on event donations to operate!
1) Heathen Blot: Form and Function by the Ida Plainsmen
2) Intro to AfroCuban Traditions, Drumming, Chanting and Dance. (Bring your Drums!), by Jade MoonRaven.
Opening Ritual: The Web of Life (OSS Ritual Crew)
Main Ritual: (Jade, Jeff)
In this ritual, we will call on the Orisha of Yoruba. We will open the gate with Eleggua (the road opener and remover of obstacles), and call on Oya, the goddess of Change and Transition, and Orisha Oko, the god of the Farm and Harvest.
In this gathering you will be asked to take stock of what was sown in your life this year, how have you grown; what has changed, and furthermore, what adjustments can you make to ensure that your harvest is bountiful. In the time leading up to the festival, journey back to the beginning of the year when you first set your goal. Then journey to the springtime, when you took steps to plant your seeds, in hopes of fruitful change. Take note of where you are now. We will celebrate how far we have come, and explore how much further we can go.
11am, Closing Ritual: Faining to Freyr in the Vé (Ida Plainsmen)
